De Smet’s second concert of the 2023 Area Concert Series took place on Sunday with the Gibson Girls from Jerseyville, Ill., performing to a full house at the De Smet Event Center. Pictured are Kabryn, left, Kathryn and Alisha as they beautifully harmonized many patriotic and old-time songs to the delight of the audience. The sisters have traveled nationwide and are well known for taking part in the Honor Flights to Washington, D.C., visiting and entertaining many veterans. The next concert will be July 9 with the legendary Diamonds group taking the stage.

Calliana Fields, De Smet, competed in the Miss South Dakota Teen Pageant last weekend in Brookings. Here, she participates in the on-stage conversation portion of the pageant. She received the top prize for that part of the competition, which earned her a $150 scholarship.

Jamie Lancaster, Amy Kruse, Billi Aughenbaugh and Rita Anderson represented De Smet at South Dakota State University Extension's fifth annual ENERGIZE conference held in Wessington Springs. This event was packed with break-out sessions sprinkled around town, where attendees heard from local businesses followed by a selected break-out session. Anderson was asked to be a session speaker, where she gave a presentation on the Highway 14 Trail Project, the structure of the Kingsbury Journal and other local happenings in De Smet. Next year, this conference will be held somewhere West River.

Getting ENERGIZED

On the last day of school, Berry Fast Cycles came to the American Lutheran Church parking lot to fix children's bikes and get them ready for summer. AJ Grubb Jr., left, Hunter Grubb and Logan Griffith with the Wellness Coalition, were getting their bikes ready. This is the third year that the Wellness Coalition has hosted this event. They gave away six helmets and four bikes.

Miss Dakota Plains’ Outstanding Teen Calli Fields spoke to all of the De Smet Middle and High School students on the last day of the school year about her pageant platform, “Sobriety in the United States.” She will be competing June 1-2, 2023, at the Miss South Dakota Teen pageant, which will be held at the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center at South Dakota State University in Brookings.
