The 22nd Annual Lake Thompson Walleye Tournament will be held June 3-5. Despite high waters flooding the north boat ramp, tourney sponsors have decided to launch all boats from the east side ramp. They made the decision to allow 80 boats this year for the event.

The 2011 Diver track squad leapt into school record books! Junior Calder Eschenbaum broke long standing school records in the boy’s triple jump with a leap of 42’ 3 ½” at Estelline while Kristin Longville tied the girl’s long jump record with a 15’ 10” leap at the regional track meet. Despite the weather and several key injuries this season, Coach Erika Hauck commended the team members for performing well as a unit.

Students on the Dean’s List at SDSU are Garrett Osvog, Lee Sanderson, Dustin Jones, Ty Eschenbaum, Michelle Bunker and Valerie Williams.

Army Major Dawn Jones has been called to active duty to support peacekeeping operations in the former Yugoslavia. She will serve a 9-month tour at MacDill AFB in Tampa, Fla., and will oversee psychological operations for Bosnia.

Ottertail advertises today’s compact fluorescent bulbs are good for your wallet and good for the environment.

June 3, 1971

Spec/4 Danny Nelson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Nip Nelson, has been awarded the Army Commendation Medal with a V device for distinguished service in Vietnam. Nelson, a gunner with Battery D, 71st Artillery, 23rd Artillery Group, exposed himself to enemy fire and delivered accurate suppression fire routing the enemy forces. Due to his actions, there were no friendly casualties. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the US Army.

The Farmers Union Oil Co will hold its annual meeting on June 5 to discuss past performances and future plans. The theme will be “The 70’s are in your hands.”

A rummage sale for the hospital benefit will be held on August 18, please contact Lizzie Anderson or Hazel Maxam if you have items to donate.

Hundreds of communities in South Dakota will honor their fallen soldiers this week by memorial services and grave decorations that signify an everlasting remembrance and gratitude for the men who took up arms against the nation’s foes. May 30 was designated as Memorial Day and a legal holiday in South Dakota on March 22, 1885, by the territorial legislature.

The LP Co-op creamery advertised that milk bottles are wanted as they are unable to buy new bottles now. They ask that patrons set them out for Jimmie Brookshire to pick up on his route or bring them to the creamery.

“Spellbound” with Gregory Peck and Ingrid Bergman will be shown June 2-4 at the Preston Theatre.

June 2, 1921

The board of trustees of the Lake Preston Cemetery Association has had some good work done at the cemetery. The building erected at the intersection of the cross streets will not only serve as a safe place to store tools but furnish shelter in case a storm comes up. The custodians worked hard to fix up the premises for Decoration Day.

The opera house was crowded to the doors and then some to witness graduation ceremonies for the Class of 1921 of LPHS.
