The De Smet Development Corporation is studying options for adding an event center to the city’s landscape. Rita Anderson, director of the De Smet Development Corporation, said during the May 8 Development Corporation meeting that she has looked at event centers built in Lake Norden and Willow Lake. The development corporation is eyeing a privately-owned parcel of land near the Super Deluxe Inn and Suites.

Twenty-nine seniors graduate on Sunday from De Smet High School. Commencement exercises are scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. in the new armory. Valedictorian Josh Pommer and salutatorian Matt Kees will speak. “We always knew we’d laugh about the times we cried, but we never dreamed we’d cry about the times we laughed,” is the class motto.

May 11, 1972

The south shore of Spirit Lake was lined with fishermen Tuesday evening; there were 45 cars counted there by the William Cronkhites, who could view the crowded shoreline from their home.

“It took me two hours — and I hadn’t fished in years,” was the happy exclamation of Merle Melstad as he held up the string of fish Tuesday afternoon. On the postal scales at De Smet, the six weighed just under six pounds.

The local Coast-to-Coast store was sold this week by Edwin F. Wheelock, the buyer being Jack Walta of Arlington. The new owner will not be in De Smet for all of his time for the present, having other interests of which to dispose. Willard Brusse, who was Mr. Wheelock’s assistant, is to be in charge.

Gov. Church has appointed J.L. Kreychie of Iroquois as a member of the state pharmaceutical board.

It is claimed there is not an open saloon in Sioux City.

Ninety-two degrees in the shade is rather sultry weather for May.

F.X. Schaub has purchased lots on Second Street, west of the Congregational Church.

The stockholders in the butter and cheese factory are requested to pay their shares at once, so work may be begun on the factory.
