The sun reflects brightly off the new copper dome on the roof of the Kingsbury County Courthouse, and the off-white roof is back to its original color.

Repair and restoration work on the roof and third floor windows is nearly complete at just under the $225,000 budgeted by the county for the project.

Jeff Nelson, president of Baldridge and Nelson Architects in Sioux Falls, was the consultant on the project.

With 63 persons attending the state highway department’s hearing here Thursday afternoon on the stretch of US Highway 14 from Iroquois to near De Smet, all sentiment expressed was in favor of continuing the present route along the south side of the Chicago & North Western railway right-of-way.

This was in opposition to the proposed route on the north side of the railway with alternates in this.

The demand for housing in De Smet appears to be as acute as at any time during or following the war—this in spite of the fact that more than 20 additions were added in housing here in 1946.

Local persons who need to move or want other quarters for added convenience or more space, newcomers who have jobs or businesses here and are without housing, and other persons who would locate here if they can find a place to live—these find the shortage most curtailing.

Houses for sale are reported as more numerous than in some time, but the demand at present time is for renting, not purchase. The need is such, however, that it seems owners who may have considered selling might find the investment worthwhile as rental properties, particularly if they can divide residences into apartments.
