One year ago, I happened to see an ad asking for volunteers to help keep the newspaper going in town. Although I wasn’t exactly sure how I could help, I thought I could offer to volunteer a couple hours here and there, but it turned into something much bigger than I’d expected.
When I initially filled out a volunteer form to help, I offered to help a couple hours a week with bookkeeping, if they needed it. I had absolutely no experience with a newspaper, but I figured with my accounting background, maybe I could help in that area.
Although I loved English classes in school and used to do some writing for fun, I had never thought of writing for a newspaper.
Reluctantly, I offered to try doing some proofreading for the paper and possibly come up with a recipe of the week. I honestly didn’t feel I was qualified to do much more than that, but I knew they needed help and figured I could at least try.
Much to my surprise, my recipe of the week turned into a weekly column, and instead of doing a little proofreading here and there, I became a copy editor for the paper.
I still can’t believe how my offering to help occasionally with the paper has turned out to be such a big part of my life now. I never thought my love for writing would become something I could share with others, and I never thought my lessons in grammar would turn into me working as a copy editor.
I love my work with the paper, and it is so rewarding to hear from all of you. I love when I’m out and about, and someone stops me to say how much they enjoy my column. It really means so much to me to hear that you look forward to my column each week. Thank you, all!
This week I’m sharing another quick and easy casserole you can throw together fast. I hope you all enjoy it!
