Arden Barlow

Arden James Barlow was born on Oct. 31, 1933, in Badger, S.D., and passed away on June 28, 2022, at Ava’s Hospice House in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Visitation with the family present will begin at 10 a.m. with a funeral service at 11 a.m. on Thurs., July 14, 2022, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. Burial will follow the luncheon at the North Preston Lutheran Cemetery.

The family requests that memorials be directed to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, the North Preston Lutheran Cemetery or the American Heart Association.

Arden James Barlow was the fifth child of Andrew and Stella (Jordet) Barlow of Badger, S.D. He had three sisters and three brothers. Arden’s family moved to Lake Preston after his father’s death when Arden was six years old. He attended school at Lake Preston. In 1953, he married his high school sweetheart Darlene Field at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, S.D. They shared a loving and faith-filled marriage for 69 years and eight months. They are the proud parents of one son, Douglas Barlow of Hudson, Wis.

Arden was an active member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church; he enjoyed singing in the choir, was a member of Men in Missions and taught Sunday school. He and his wife Darlene delivered Meals On Wheels for many years. Arden managed a little league baseball team. He enjoyed volunteering at the Sioux Empire Fair and was a member of the Sioux Falls Lions Club and Augustana Boosters. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed fishing, bowling and especially spending time with his family, his grandsons and great-grandchildren.

Arden was employed at Larson’s Meat Market in Lake Preston before moving to Sioux Falls, where he worked at Polar Lockers. When Sambo’s first came to Sioux Falls in 1974, the restaurant was operated by Arden. In 1976, he took a job as regional manager for Sambo’s Restaurants, Inc. He was in charge of restaurants in North Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota. In 1981, he became a District Manager for Country Kitchen. In 1984, he purchased and managed the Burlington Restaurant on 41st Street for 15 years before retiring in 1999.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Darlene; his son, Douglas (Kristen); grandchildren, Anthony (Ingrid), Jonathan (Emily) and Gregory (Kaaren) and nine great-grandchildren, Elias, Espen, Bergen, Kylie, Brooks, Quinn, Bode, Freya and Britta. Arden is also survived by one brother, Howard (Dorothy) Barlow; in-laws, LeRoy (Kathryn Koch), Robert (Paulette) Field, Barbara Carlson and Dorothy Nelson.

Preceding Arden in death were his mother and father, Andrew and Stella Barlow; his siblings, Florence Hronski, Ruby Bishop, Mary Pirlet, Gordon and Stanley Barlow; several nieces and nephews.
