Athletes compete at State Track Meet


Track and field athletes, along with their coaches, headed to Rapid City Thursday morning for the State B Track Meet.

On Friday, Kalen Garry competed in the 100m dash and placed 15th. Kennadi Buchholz competed in the girls high jump, placing 9th, and Mackenzie Zell, the only senior athlete to be a state qualifier, threw in the discus competition and placed 2nd.

On Saturday, the girls medley relay of Julie Anderson, Emma Albrecht, Hazel Luethmers and Mirra Beck ran, placing 22nd. Damon Wilkinson competed in the boys shot put and placed 11th, while Mackenzie Zell also threw in the girls shot put and place 3rd.

Congratulations to Mackenzie Zell for medaling in both the discus and shot put and to the rest of the state qualifiers.

Lake Preston

Senior Rhett McMasters finished 11th in the 1600 and 3200 Meter Runs, while sophomore Stella DeKnikker finished 22nd in the 100 Meter Dash.

This was McMasters’ 5th and final trip to the State Meet. He finished the 1600 Meter Run in 4:52 and 10:56 in the 3200 Meter Run. DeKnikker made her second trip to the State Meet and finished the 100 Meter Dash in 13:57.

Congratulations to them both as well as Coach Tonya Bumann who also made her last trip to the State Meet. Bumann will hang up her whistle after 10 years of service to the students of Lake Preston as their coach for cross country and track and field. Thank you, Coach, for sharing your time and talents with so many students over the years.
