Auditions held for this year’s LIW pageant

The script and chorus will have some minor changes

“On the Prairie: Laura’s Legacy” hosted auditions this past weekend at the De Smet Event and Wellness Center to select the cast that will make up the 51st annual pageant.

“Prairie Patchwork” was the title of last year’s pageant; “On the Prairie: Laura’s Legacy” will be the new title. The script will have some minor changes, along with some changes to the chorus as well.

The Laura Ingalls Wilder Pageant will be presented on July 8-10, 15-17 and 22-24 at the pageant grounds in De Smet.

Co-directing this year will be Nicole Berg, last year’s assistant director, and Joey Daly who played the role of Almanzo in last year’s pageant. Daly said he enjoyed acting on the outside grounds last summer and looks forward to the challenges Berg and he will face as co-directors.

Berg works with Crawford-Osthus as a mortuary assistant, and Daly is a student of music education at South Dakota State University. Both are looking forward to a great year in the pageant’s 51st presentation.

The script calls for six major female characters and three minors. Male roles include two major and four minor roles. There are also some unisex roles for an adult singing school teacher and chorus roles of various ages who act as residents and narrators.

Practices will be scheduled for three days a week in May and June. Minor roles will likely have one practice day a week, and some of the major roles could include all three nights.

After the auditions, the major roles may have already been assigned, but there are still many minor roles for the chorus as a resident or narrators.

If interested in helping the pageant fill these roles, it is not too late. Call or text Daly at (605) 690-1226.
