The De Smet High School Golf Team took fourth place in the 2021 State B Golf Tournament held in Brookings June 7-8. Three Bulldogs, Kalen Gary, Cody Cavanaugh and Rett Osthus, along with Coach Cory Beck, made their way to Brookings Country Club for the state competition. The golf course is an 18-hole course with a par of 72.
Forty teams from around the state competed, with 119 students hitting the greens. Tee times began at 8:30 a.m. on both days. The tournament was a two day, 36-hole event with each player scheduled for 18-holes each day.
De Smet’s golf team finished fourth in the tournament. The Bulldogs scored a 267 on Monday and a 247 on Tuesday for a total of 514 shots, just 82 strokes over par. Chester placed first in the tournament with a 257 on Monday and 243 on Tuesday for a total of 500, 68 over par. Platte-Geddes had 70 over par to place second. They scored a 502, with 256 on Monday and 246 on Tuesday. Deubrook took third place scoring a 259 on day one and a 247 on day two for a total of 506. That was just 74 over par.
Osthus and Cavanaugh both tied for 18th place in the individual scoring. Osthus scored an 85 followed by an 82 for a total of 167, 23 over par. Cavanaugh was 23 over par shooting an 84 and an 83 for a total of 167. Garry scored a 98 Monday and on Tuesday, an 82 for a total of 180, leaving him with a 36 over par.
Brody Boltjes from Platte-Geddes won the tournament shooting a 78 and a 74 for a total of 152, eight over par. In second place was Bennett Cassens from Faulkton at 9 over par, with a score of 78 and a 75 totaling 153. Tanner Preheim from Deuel took third place with an 80 and 76 for a total of 156, 12 over par.
