With COVID-19 numbers on the rise throughout Kingsbury County, this year’s De Smet High School homecoming coronation at De Smet looked a lot different than usual. Instead of taking place in the school auditorium, the ceremony was moved to the football field to allow for better social distancing. The event was also livestreamed on Facebook.

Each of the fall sports coaches introduced their teams and gave a pep talk. The De Smet High School band played, and a skit was performed by former principal Larry Janish, DHS senior parent Tristin Gruenhagen and DHS alumnus Kyle Lee.

Alec Dobson and Aria Gruenhagen were crowned king and queen by last year’s king and queen, Daniel DeDeyne and Reyna Beck. Other queen candidates were Carly Wiese, Mackenzie Zell and Caitlyn Brag. Other king candidates were Cody Cavanaugh, Noah Roth and Ethan McCune. Sullivyn Siver and A.J. Roth served as first grade attendants.

Following coronation, students and staff held the traditional burning of the DS.

Friday’s pre-game activities included a homecoming parade and pep rally at the football field. Homecoming weekend culminated in a 44-6 Bulldog win over the Castlewood Warriors.
