The De Smet Bulldogs are returning to the South Dakota State B Tournament this week after an impressive 64-38 win over Timber Lake in their SoDak 16 playoff game in Redfield Tuesday night, March 9.
The Bulldogs’ excellent ball handling and passing helped them to break a very good 2-2-1 zone press by the Panthers in the first quarter and got them off to another quick start, leading 15-6 after one quarter. De Smet’s scrappy man-to-man defense frustrated the Timber Lake players, and De Smet coasted to a comfortable 38-13 advantage at halftime.
De Smet’s lead at one time reached 40 points late in the third quarter, and that enabled Coach Jeff Gruenhagen to play his entire bench throughout the fourth quarter, giving everyone one on his squad some playing time.
Kalen Garry again led all scorers in the game with 26 points. Damon Wilkinson had 12 points. Cody Cavanaugh added eight points and Ethan McCune seven. Garry also led the Dogs in rebounding with nine boards followed by McCune and Wilkinson with five each.

Timber Lake 6 13 25 38
The win over Timber Lake sends De Smet to their third straight trip to the State B Tournament to be held again this year in Aberdeen on March 18-20. Two years ago, they lost to Clark-Willow Lake in the championship game, and last year their season came to a very disappointing end after qualifying as the #1 seed, only to have the season end due to the coronavirus pandemic.
They are again the #1 seed in this year's tourney and will play the #8 seed, Lower Brule, in the opening game on Thurs., March 18 at 12:00 p.m.
