Bulldogs run and throw over Buffalos

Ranked #5 in this week's Class 9B poll, the De Smet Bulldogs football team took on the Stanley County Buffalos Friday night at Wilkinson Field in De Smet.

The Buffalos received the opening kickoff, but the Bulldog defense quickly forced a fumble recovered by Kadyn Fast. De Smet took over at midfield for their first possession. Three plays later, Fast took the ball 28 yards for a touchdown. Dylan Zell rushed for the two-point conversion, and the Bulldogs led 8-0.

De Smet kicked off and held Stanley County 3-and-out. The Bulldogs put together a nice drive that was capped off by a five-yard touchdown pass from Britt Carlson to Fast. The two-point conversion was no good, and De Smet led 14-0.

The Bulldog defense forced another Buffalo punt and quickly scored again on a 32-yard touchdown pass from Carlson to Tom Aughenbaugh. Carlson ran in for the two-point conversion, and De Smet led 20-0.

De Smet again held Stanley County to a punt, and Fast took it for a 72-yard touchdown. Trace Van Regenmorter took it in for two, and the score was 28-0, Bulldogs.

The Buffalos failed to get a first down after the kickoff, and De Smet rushed down the field. Van Regenmorter scored on a 45-yard run. Gannon Gruenhagen caught a two-point conversion, and the Bulldogs led 36-0 at halftime

After halftime, Stanley County scored one touchdown and kicked an extra point for their only score of the game.

The final score was 36-7 in favor of the Bulldogs.

Leaders for De Smet were Carlson with 7/14 passing for 109 yards and three touchdowns and 30 rushing yards. Fast had four receptions for 66 yards and two touchdowns, three carries for 30 yards rushing and a punt return for a touchdown. Aughenbaugh added one catch for 32 yards and a touchdown. Van Regenmorter ran four times for 62 yards and a touchdown, and Zell had six carries for 57 yards.

Defensive leaders were Noah Harrison, Gruenhagen and Van Regenmorter with six tackles each. Zell added five tackles.

No stats were reported for Stanley County.

The Bulldogs will be back in action Friday in Dell Rapids to take on Dell Rapids St. Mary.
