De Smet Community Foundation- ‘go-to’ for projects

Serving the area since 2013, the De Smet Community Foundation continues to support efforts that help our community. The Foundation has been the community ‘go-to’ nonprofit organization that has made many projects a reality and encourages a legacy of community giving.

The Foundation serves as a ‘pass-through’ for projects as a tax-deductible way for donations to be made to worthy projects, as well as long term giving. Area organizations can use this means to give their donors the opportunity for their gifts to be eligible for an IRS tax deduction at the end of the year.

Noteworthy about the De Smet Community Foundation is that there are not any administrative fees taken from any donations given. Every penny gifted goes completely to the organization or specified projects donated to. In place of paid staff, many hours of administration and grant writing are put in by our community’s volunteers.

This also means by not taking any administrative fees, there are not funds for marketing. The only method of creating awareness is by ‘word-of-mouth’, news articles and social media in place of expensive marketing campaigns.

The De Smet Community Foundation provides the opportunity for leaving a lasting legacy. The Foundation should be considered in estate planning as an opportunity to impact the people and projects in our area for years to come with Charitable Trusts, Bequests, Endowments and more.

There are so many ways to give. Specific accounts may be started by groups, families, employees from specific businesses or alumni and used for specified project or interests.

Donations take many shapes – from a written check to a gift of commodities, stock, a piece of land or livestock. Many financial accounts, CDs, mutual funds, annuities, life insurance policies and retirement accounts allow one to make a charitable gift using beneficiary designations. The De Smet Foundation has great flexibility with accepting gifts and how a person would like to distribute the donations.

The De Smet Community Foundation has been a part of many community projects and holds numerous funds that have been established by individuals and organizations including the Music Boosters, The Village, De Smet Concert Series, T-Ball and Baseball Fields, Veterans Memorial, LIW Playground Equipment, Impact Classes, Events Center Furnishings, LIW Pageant promotion, De Smet News purchase, De Smet Master Plan Study, Carmon Wellness Center Equipment, Athletic Complex, Midstate Theater Furnishings and the De Smet Events Center building and landscaping. The Foundation is responsible for writing many grants for the various projects.

As the end of the year comes around, you will find mailings and other means of marketing by countless organizations asking for donations. Just like remembering to shop locally, it is important to think of our local Foundations and non-profit organizations to donate to first. This money donated locally all stays local, and 100% of what you donate goes to the specific project you want it to go to.

Other De Smet Foundations to consider giving donations are the De Smet Education Foundation and Avera De Smet Memorial Hospital Foundation. Nonprofit organizations with a base in De Smet include the Food Pantry, Laura Ingalls Wilder Society, LIW Pageant, De Smet Community Women, Kingsbury Cancer Care, Kingsbury Country Club and more. There are many other worthwhile Foundations and nonprofits throughout Kingsbury County. Please contact me (605-203-0216) to make certain your nonprofit is listed or for more information about giving to any of these organizations.
