De Smet golfers headed to Rocky Run Golf Course, an 18-hole, championship-quality course in Dell Rapids, for the Region 2B Golf Tournament on May 24. Rett Osthus, Kalen Garry, Kasen Janssen and Colt Wilkinson all qualified to continue on to the State Golf Tournament.
In the Boys Competition, 13 teams competed. Chester High School took first place in the team competition with a score of 240. De Smet and Howard tied for second, scoring 259. State rules allow that if any teams tie in the regional competition, both teams will qualify for the state tournament.
In the Individual Boys Competition, 46 boys competed. Taylor Kriech from Colman-Egan shot a 74 to take first place in the tournament. Ashton Olivier and Brayden Vogel, both from Chester, took second and third place, respectfully. Olivier scored a 75, while Vogel shot an 80. For the De Smet players, Rett Osthus scored an 83 earning fifth place, while Kalen Garry scored an 85 to put him in tenth place. Kasen Janssen shot a 91, qualifying for state. Colt Wilkinson scored a 93 and qualified as part of the Team Competition, but will be replaced by Tom Aughenbaugh at the state tournament due to an injury.
There were seven teams competing in the Girls Competition. Chester High School girls repeated their boys' team achievement by taking first place with a team score of 264. Deubrook claimed second place scoring a 269, and Howard placed third with a 289. De Smet girls finished fifth with a 343.
In the Individual Girls Competition, 33 girls played. Chester’s team earned the top two slots with Jadyn McDonald shooting an 82, and Ayi McDonald scoring an 85. In third place, Bailey Landmark scored an 88. In the De Smet girls, Brooke Jennings shot a 111, and Jacie McCune shot a 115. Ivey Schoenfelder scored a 117, and Harper Anderson shot a 122.
