Fourth of July

Family tradition turns into celebration for many

For the past several years, Mike Strande has hosted a July 4 celebration on his property on the west side of Lake Preston.

“I basically just started doing it for my nieces and nephews,” said Strande. “The family got together for a potluck, and then we lit fireworks.”

The word spread quickly that Strandes were doing fireworks, and soon people started showing up. Strande said that people who are camped at Lake Thompson will drive in to enjoy the display. People around Lake Preston can view the display from their yards, and others park in the Strande’s lot or on one of the business lots across the highway to watch. Even those passing by on Highway 14 will slow down to watch the beautiful display. Strande said he is happy that older people can sit and watch without having to drive far.

Area residents and visitors have expressed appreciation for the fact that the Strandes do this for the community.
