Garry to play as a Jackrabbit

Bulldog’s senior Kalen Garry has made a commitment to play college basketball with the South Dakota State University Jackrabbits.

This decision came just ten days after the Bulldogs participated in the Hoophall Classic hosted in the Sanford Pentagon. The De Smet team took on Dream City Christian School’s National Basketball Team in an exciting game.

“That was a really fun game. We went out and played hard. We came up a little short, but we learned a lot of things that will help us further into the season,” said Garry.

The Bulldogs were tied or led throughout the game until the last 17 seconds, and then lost the game 57-61. With teams from all over the United States playing in the Hoophall Classic, there were several recruiters watching the talent on display.

In the week following the game, Garry received a scholarship offer from University of South Dakota, a Division I school. That offer was a direct result of the Hoophall Classic.

Garry also visited the SDSU campus and met with the coaches, where he was offered another scholarship.

“I just love the coaches there, and it's a good program to get into,” said Garry.

He is still undecided on an academic program and will take general studies, until he decides on a degree.

“My brother played basketball when I was little,” Garry said. “I used to watch him and took after him. My dad also helped me get started. I love the game, so I kept playing.”

This season Garry has had two games scoring 35 points, scoring a total of 125 so far. His career total now stands at 1,740 points.

Garry says this season has been going well, and he is hopeful the Bulldogs will return to the state tournament and make another run for the State B Championship.
