The De Smet girls basketball team played in the Huron Holiday Classic last Wed., Dec. 29, paired up with Jones County.
The Bulldogs started the game perfectly with a nice tip from Kennadi Buchholz to Jada Burke, who took a couple of dribbles and had a quick pass to Emma Albrecht to start the game. The game was low scoring on the board by both teams until mid second quarter. De Smet was able to pull ahead of Jones County by getting some steals resulting in quick baskets and also by some nice backdoor cuts. Buchholz hit a three with 50 seconds left in the first half to give the Bulldogs a nice lead. Jones County wasn't able to get many good shots, struggling on both ends of the court.
De Smet defense stepped up in the third quarter to hold their opponents to three points, while Bulldog offense looked inside to the post play for baskets. Jones County tried putting on a full court press in the fourth quarter, but the Bulldogs would beat it with a fast break or would end up at the free throw line. Buchholz had two nice blocked shots late in the fourth to help stop Jones County's try at a comeback.
Leading De Smet were Buchholz with 19 points, 14 rebounds and four blocked shots, Albrecht with 11 points, four rebounds and Hazel Luethmers with eight points.

De Smet traveled to Deuel High School for a double header against the Cardinals Monday, Jan. 3. The start of the game was a bit slow for both teams, as they struggled to get things going. At the start of the second quarter, however, the Bulldogs had a quick basket and then caused the Cardinals to turn the ball over. Coach Pitts made a switch up on the defense, which helped De Smet make some big stops and then come back down to work the ball around and into Kennadi Buchholz. Emma Albrecht and Alyssa Asleson hit a couple key moment shots at the end of the second half to put De Smet in the lead.
The Bulldogs’ aggressive defense continued into the second half, and offensively the team had good ball movement. A nice, quick steal by Hazel Luethmers, which she took in for a layup, was the nudge the Bulldog team needed going into the final period. Buchholz took charge of De Smet's offense in the fourth by getting the offensive rebounds and putting the shots back up. Jada Burke worked hard defensively by holding down the Cardinal's top scorer.
Leading De Smet were Buchholz with 23 points, nine rebounds, four blocked shots and Albrecht with nine points, six rebounds.
The De Smet JV had a great team win, 43-14, with almost all players on the scoreboard.
De Smet 5 20 33 45
