The undefeated De Smet girls basketball teamtraveled to Dell Rapids on Mon., Dec. 20 for a double-header with Dell Rapids St. Mary.
The first half of this basketball game was back and forth, and neither team took a lead. Jada Burke and Alyssa Asleson each had nice three-point baskets in the first quarter to get the Bulldogs on the board. The Cardinals were a quick team who liked to run the floor, but De Smet had a height advantage on them and used it well. The Bulldogs got into a bit of foul trouble but handled it by playing better defense.
De Smet came out the second half and shut down the Cardinals driving to the basket with Kennadi Buchholz making some big stops. This caused St. Mary to take shots from the outside, but they were unable to get them to count. The Cardinals continued to be quick on the rebounds and get second attempts to stay in the game. The Bulldogs defense caused St. Mary to turn the ball over in the fourth, and De Smet was able to get a few nice shots and drives to the basket to increase the lead on the board and seal the win.
De Smet leaders were Buchholz with 21 points, 12 rebounds, five blocked shots and Burke with 18 points, six rebounds.
The De Smet girls JV team lost in a tough game, 20-31.
