Howard John Melstad, 94, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, died, Dec. 13, 2020, at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls. Memorial Services for Howard will be 10 a.m. Fri., Dec. 18, 2020, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church with Rev. Tim Selbo officiating. Burial will be in the Lake Preston Cemetery. Howard John Melstad was born on Sept. 25, 1926, to Carl and Martha (Sime) Melstad at Hetland, S.D. He attended grade school and graduated from high school in Hetland, S.D. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII. On June 27, 1948, he married Norma Jean Meyer in Badger, S.D. They moved to Kansas City where Howard attended watch making school. Following Howard’s schooling they moved to Orange City, Iowa until they bought a jewelry store in Lake Preston. Together they raised four sons. While in Lake Preston, he taught Sunday School, was a member of the Lake Preston Legion (Commander), was active in the Chamber of Commerce and was a member of the Fire Department. In 1967, they bought a jewelry store in Vermillion, S.D. Howard was a member of the Vermillion Legion, the Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Eagles. They sold the business in 1988, and he retired on Dec. 24, 1988. Howard enjoyed dancing, playing cards, spending time with family and friends, and wintering in Arizona following retirement. He also enjoyed his last years living at StoneyBrook Suites Assisted Living in Sioux Falls.
Howard is survived their four children; Dennis (Jeri) of Dakota Dunes, S.D., Kevin (Karen) of Gilbert, Ariz., Darren (Teresa) of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Korry (Deb) of Sioux Falls, S,D,; ten grandchildren - Brad Melstad, Jodi Marshall, Melanie Bye, Jenny Cary, Megan Kuehler, Austin Melstad, Logan Melstad, Mackenzie Melstad, Jason Laferriere and Nick Laferriere; and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Norma and two sisters, Ardelle and Mavis.
