James Hein

James Lloyd Hein was born Jan. 21, 1945, in De Smet, S.D., to Lloyd and Luella (Timmons) Hein. He grew up and attended school at De Smet, where he excelled in high school basketball. He played in the first South Dakota State Basketball Tournament in the newly-built Sioux Falls Arena. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. On Nov. 4, 1967, he married Dianna Bemis. They lived in Cavour for four years and then moved to Arlington, where he was the manager of the elevator for 10-1/2 years and a volunteer in the fire department. He then moved on to work for the DM&E railroad for 10+ years. He has been a member of the Arlington Legion for 48 years.

He is survived by his wife, Dianna; two daughters, Melinda (Paul) Bommersbach and Kristy (Dan) Husby and one son, Tim (Tammy), all of Sioux Falls; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; three brothers, Jerry (Marolyn), Tom (Lynny) and Scott (Terri); one sister, Rhea (Dan) Von Eye and two very special dogs, Scooter and Tiny.

He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers.

Funeral services for Mr. Hein will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thurs., April 14, 2022, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Arlington with Pastor Elisa McMullen officiating. The burial will be in the De Smet Cemetery at De Smet. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Wed., April 13, 2022, at the Johnson-Henry Funeral Home in Arlington and preceding services in the church.
