De Smet capped off homecoming week with a football game Friday night against the Kimball-White Lake WiLdKats.
The undefeated and #1 ranked Bulldogs won the opening toss and took the first play of the game 45 yards on a pass from Colt Wilkinson to Rett Osthus. De Smet would get inside the 1-yard line, but a bad snap between the center and quarterback caused a fumble, and the WiLdKats took over.
De Smet’s defense made quick work of the Kimball-White Lake offense, forcing a 3 and out punt from their own endzone, and the Bulldogs took over at the 15-yard line. Kalen Garry and Wilkinson each had strong runs, and the drive was capped off by a 1-yard touchdown run from Wilkinson. Wilkinson’s pass to Tory Holland was good for the 2-point conversion, and De Smet took an early 8-0 lead.
The Bulldog defense held again on Kimball-White Lake’s next drive forcing another punt by the WiLdKats. This time, Rett Osthus would field the kick and run it back 76 yards for a touchdown. Wilkinson found Garry for the 2-point conversion, and De Smet led 16-0.
The WiLdKats fumbled on their next possession, but then forced a rare Bulldog punt. De Smet’s defense held again, though, this time taking over on downs at midfield. The Bulldogs drove to the 15-yard line but were unable to capitalize on 4th down, giving the ball back to Kimball-White Lake.
The Bulldog’s next drive, Wilkinson connected with Osthus for a 42-yard pass and then ended the drive with a 23-yard touchdown pass to Garry. Wilkinson rushed for the 2-point conversion, and De Smet held a 24-0 lead at halftime.
De Smet kicked off to begin the second half, but the WiLdKats fumbled the kickoff, and the Bulldogs recovered. The Bulldogs marched down the field, and Wilkinson scored on a 1-yard touchdown run. The 2-point conversion failed, and De Smet led 30-0.
Kimball-White Lake put together a solid drive on their next possession, but an Osthus interception on the 1-yard line ended their scoring try. The Bulldogs drove 99 yards with pass completions to Osthus and Garry and runs by Wilkinson and Holland and capped it off with a 1-yard touchdown pass to Osthus. The 2-point attempt was no good, and the score was 36-0 in favor of De Smet.
The Bulldogs would force another 3 and out punt by Kimball-White Lake early in the 4th quarter. Osthus fielded it and took it 40 yards to the end zone for another score. Kadyn Fast rushed for the 2-point conversion, and the scoreboard read 44-0 in favor of De Smet. This would be the final score.
