Legion draws winning tickets for cash-for-gas

Three lucky winners for this fundraiser

De Smet’s American Legion Post 138 held a drawing last Saturday afternoon for three winning tickets for their “cash-for-gas” fundraising raffle. The drawing was held at Fields Fish & Game sporting goods store in town, attended by more than a dozen people, including several Legion members. Since FF&G sells beverages, Post Commander Harvey Hubbard and fellow Legion member Gary Schumacher kindly purchased a couple six-packs of beer and shared them with the other adults in attendance.

Like the last Post fundraiser raffle, only 150 tickets were sold, but this time, tickets cost $10 each instead of $20. Instead of only one winner collecting the grand prize, three separate tickets were drawn, and each lucky winner received $200 in cash to spend on gas or whatever they choose. The remaining funds from ticket sales went to the Post’s kitchen/building improvement funds.

Hubbard shook up all 150 ticket stubs in a big bucket, and the first ticket was drawn by a visiting young customer named Maddox. He drew a ticket with the name Emma Johnson of De Smet, the daughter of former Post Commander Chuck Johnson.

The second and third tickets were drawn by Legion member Jerry “Hutch” Hutchinson, who claimed that he didn’t have any tickets in the bucket. Winner number two was Cory Beck of De Smet, and Rita Brownlee of Watertown was the third and final winner.

After the drawing, Hubbard thanked FF&G for hosting the drawing and went on to call each of the winners to let them know the good news.

The drawing was live-streamed on Facebook, filmed and narrated by Amanda Fields, whose husband David is the owner of FF&G and a Legion member as well. The video can still be seen on the Post’s Facebook page, “De Smet, SD American Legion Post 138.”
