Alivia Spilde, Jensine Matson, Ramey Gearhart and Will Matson are recipients of a $1830 Malone Scholarship presented to them at the Oldham-Ramona Awards Program held on May 17.

The Francis T. Malone Scholarship Fund was established in 1998 to encourage academic excellence within the Oldham-Ramona School District. Francis Malone understood that community involvement is a way of life in rural America and a necessity in keeping small, rural communities alive.

At the time of his death, he was the majority owner of the American State Bank in Oldham and Ramona (now First National Bank). He believed supporting education and young people were a necessary investment in our communities.

Mr. Malone also believed students should pursue educational goals that would allow them to make a positive contribution to their communities.

Ramey Gearhart will attend Lake Area Technical College for diesel technology.

Jensine Matson will attend Southeast Technical College for vascular sonography/diagnostic medical sonography.

Will Matson will attend Dakota Wesleyan University for sports management.

Alivia Spilde will attend Dakota State University for math education.

The Francis T. Malone Scholarship program provides financial support to full-time students pursuing technical degrees or four-year college degrees. The program was developed to recognize and support deserving students living in the Oldham-Ramona School District.

The number of scholarships and the scholarship amounts vary from year to year. The scholarship review committee determines the number and size of the scholarships based upon the funds generated by the endowment for the given year and the number of applications received. With this year’s scholarship recipients, 103 Oldham-Ramona High School seniors have received approximately $202,000.00 since the spring of 1999.

Scholarship applicants are judged on their written essay, high school transcript, high school activities, special honors and awards, community service and letters of recommendation.
