I survived the holidays! I didn’t get as much baking done as I had wanted, but I was able to get just enough made to keep everyone satisfied. However, I realized that I will never be able to compete with my mom.
For our Christmas get together, we had all of our kids come over later in the evening, so we just had munchies for everyone. We had a big platter of meats, another full of cheeses and crackers. I made up some nacho cheese dip with homemade salsa for nachos. Then, I baked up a couple loaves of beer bread to cut up and serve with dip.
I thought it was a pretty nice spread for our gathering. We didn’t run out of food, and everyone got full. But, after going to my parents’ house for their Christmas party which was the same size, I quickly realized how pathetic mine must have looked.
My mom had meats and cheeses, veggies and dips, fruit and pickled asparagus, and then she brought out little smokies wrapped in bacon with a brown sugar glaze.
Her dining room table was covered, too. She had gingerbread, sugar and chocolate cookies. Then, she had containers with her homemade candy, which included chocolate covered cherries, peanut butter cups, toffee, chocolate covered peanuts and so much more.
As if that wasn’t enough, she had two big pans of lasagna and two sheets of garlic cheese bread to go along with it later on. Finally, she pulled out a huge container of brownies and a pumpkin pie for dessert.
Yup, I will never even try to compete with my mom when it comes to food or baking for the holidays. She wins.
After all the food I had at my mom’s, I thought I’d share a lighter snack…popcorn. Of course, with all the mix-ins, it isn’t quite as “light” as plain popcorn, but it’s probably better than cookies and candy. Enjoy!
