Myrl Jean (Pederson) Austad, 98, Lake Preston, S.D., entered her heavenly home March 28, 2022, at home.
Myrl was born Oct. 26, 1923, in Nunda to George and Clara (Olson) Pederson. Myrl was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She attended Arlington High School, graduating in 1941. On Dec. 1, 1941, she married Harley Austad. They lived in the Arlington area until 1952, then moved to Lake Preston, where they raised four children. They were married 68 years when Harley passed away in 2010.
Myrl was active in Cub Scouts, Extension Club and many activities at the Lake Preston Lutheran Church. She was also a familiar face at most basketball and volleyball games and music events.
In 2014, Myrl moved to an apartment in Brookings, where she enjoyed puzzling and daily coffee parties. In 2018, Myrl returned to Lake Preston and resided the last four years at Silver Plains Assisted Living, spending many hours reading and visiting family and friends. Myrl is remembered for her classic, welcoming personality, readiness for coffee and conversation. She loved making homemade donuts and divinity; her famous fried chicken was a favorite. Myrl thoroughly enjoyed every minute she was able to spend with grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her children, Verdon Austad, Eugene (Janice) Austad, Mike (Judy) Austad and Janet (Duane) Jones; 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harley; parents; brothers, Gerald and Ralph; sister, Beverly Johnson and daughter-in-law, Joy Austad.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sat., April 9, 2022, at 10:30 a.m. at Lake Preston Lutheran Church. Visitation with family present will be Friday from 5-7 p.m. at the church. www.heritagesfsd.com
