According to “Carthage, Gem of the Redstone,” by Sally Madison, the hit songs in 1900 were “Bird in a Gilded Cage” and “Strike up the Band,” and L. Frank Baum wrote the book, “Wizard of Oz.” Life expectancy was 48 for men and 51 for women. The U.S. population was 75,000,000 and the unemployment rate was five percent. A first-class stamp cost two cents, the average income was $637 a year and the average cost of a home was $4,000. In Carthage, there were two hotels, six churches and two banks. Land was selling for $10-$15.50 an acre. The creamery in Carthage had made 1054 pounds of butter in one day, and four wolves were killed in a hunt south of town.
