The Bulldog football team traveled to Selby on Friday to take on the Herreid-Selby Area Wolverines. Both teams entered the semi-final game undefeated, and the winner would be moving on to the state 9A championship game in Vermillion.

De Smet won the opening toss and received the kickoff. De Smet quickly made their way down the field, and the Bulldogs struck first on an 8-yard touchdown pass from Colt Wilkinson to Kalen Garry. The 2-point conversion carry by Tory Holland was no good, and the Bulldogs led 6-0.

The Bulldogs defense held on the Wolverines first possession and forced a turnover on downs. The first quarter would end with a 6-0 De Smet lead.

After punts from each team, De Smet took advantage of good field position, and again found the end zone on a Garry 12-yard run. Wilkinson’s pass to Rett Osthus was good for the 2-point conversion, and the Bulldogs led 14-0. That would be the halftime score as well.

De Smet opened with a short kick after halftime giving the Wolverines great field position. HSA quickly marched down the field and scored on a 10-yard touchdown run by Brenden Begeman. Begeman ran for the 2-point conversion, and the Bulldog lead was 14-8.

The Wolverines kicked an on-side kick and recovered it, giving them the ball again with great field position. They quickly scored on a touchdown pass and again converted the 2-point attempt. HSA took the lead 16-14.

The game was a defensive battle the rest of the way out. De Smet drove deep into Wolverine territory one more time, but the drive would end with a fumble. The Bulldogs came up short, with the scoreboard reading 16-14 in favor of Herreid-Selby Area.
