Shirley Joanne Holland, 86, of Lake Preston, died Thurs., April 8, 2021, at the De Smet Good Samaritan Center. Shirley was born April 19, 1934, to Nels and Myrtle (Warne) Paulson in Manchester, S.D. She was the eldest of eleven siblings. Shirley attended country school and graduated from De Smet High School in 1952. She married Ronal Burnel Holland on July 3, 1954, at the American Lutheran Church in De Smet, S.D. They resided on a farm near Lake Preston where they raised their five children, moving into town in 1990.

Shirley began working at the Kingsbury Memorial Manor in 1975 and continued for over twenty-five years. She was a very dedicated worker, enjoying the many residents and coworkers. She simply enjoyed serving others, always opening her home for coffee and conversation with family and friends.

Her biggest joy was her family. She loved being with her siblings, specifically the many “sister trips.” Shirley dedicated her life to her children, priding herself in each of their accomplishments, especially the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was known for her delicious chocolate cake, knowledge and love of birds and flowers; encouraging, positive words to all, but mainly her beautiful smile.

Grateful for her life are her children, Debra Pedersen of Sioux Falls, Dawn (Brandon) Karban of Lake Preston, Ronn Holland of Los Angeles, Doreen (Eugene) Emery of Frederick and Rick (LaRae) Holland of Lake Preston; twelve grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three sisters, Diann Stanley of Aurora, Colo, Beverly Nelson (Jim) of Fargo, N.D. and Maxine (George) Timmerman of Balaton, Minn., and one brother, Gordy Paulson of Salina, Kan.

She was preceded in death by parents; her husband, Ronal; four sisters, Marjean, Kay, Donna and Marilyn; two brothers, Roger and Garen.

Funeral services for Shirley were held on Mon., April 12, 2021, at the Lake Preston Lutheran Church in Lake Preston; burial was in the Lake Preston Cemetery.
