Sundog over the snow-covered prairie

Sundogs, caused by the sun's refracting light through ice crystals in the atmosphere, are best seen when the sun is low on the horizon. This photograph was taken just north of De Smet off Highway 25 on Jan. 5 at 10 a.m., with an outside temperature at zero degrees and quite windy conditions.
