Vehicle thefts keep Sheriff’s Department busy

Stolen vehicle recovered, and truck reported stolen

On May 4 at 9:13 a.m. a call came in reporting a vehicle smoking on 205th Street between 437th and 438th Avenues, northeast of De Smet. Two De Smet Fire Trucks, an ambulance and the Kingsbury County Sheriff Department responded.

Upon arrival, fire units found a four-door maroon sedan parked on a field approach with smoke coming from the trunk. Some papers had appeared to have been set on fire, possibly with the intent to destroy the vehicle. Firefighters extinguished the smoldering material.

The car turned out to be reported stolen from Sioux Falls on Sat., April 30. A diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) tank was found at the same location.

At 11:21 a.m. the Kingsbury County Sheriff’s Department received a report of a stolen truck in the vicinity of 214th Street and 441st Avenue, south of Lake Preston. The vehicle taken was a green 2003 Ford F-350 with a heavy-duty grill guard and a winch up front. The truck has South Dakota license plates 42H 182.

Witnesses say a middle-age Hispanic male wearing a black turtleneck had been seen in the area earlier.

It is believed these incidents may be related. If you have any information on either vehicle stolen, please call the Kingsbury County Sheriff’s Office at 854-3339.

On Monday morning in Arlington there were several reports of keys being stolen from vehicles. Please don’t leave anything of value in parked vehicles and lock your vehicles when unattended.
