Boys and girls basketball kept fans busy this week including the 8th grade girls who have won two tournaments in a row. The team members are Molly Brown, Amanda Tolzin, Mikayla Timm, Breanna Paul, Marly Vendrig and Kristen Longville. 7th grader Jaimie Wilson filled in for Vendrig when she was injured.

Lance Radamaker and Daniel Summers advanced to the Region One wrestling tournament.

The Lady Divers won the District 4B Volleyball Championship after defeating Elkton and Arlington. Lake Preston will host the Region 3B VB Tournament on Friday.

An athletic booster club was formed last week, with twenty people attending the organizational meeting. The primary purposes are to support athletes and athletics and to promote integrity and good sportsmanship. They elected Al Vedvei president, Rodney Olson vice-president, Brad Sanderson secretary, Mary Nielson treasurer, Ron Blachford project chair, Jackie Leonhardt membership chair and Wayne Soren fundraising chair.

LPHS instrumentalists won four firsts and nine seconds in the regional soloist and small ensembles competition at Watertown last week.

A 15-month-old entry by Wienk Charolais was judged Grand Champion Charolais Bull at the Watertown Farm Show last week.

At the Black Hills Stock Show in Rapid City, in their first year as exhibitors, Brian and Dean Odden had the Reserve Grand Champion Charolais Bull. The 17-month-old bull was the second high selling Charolais and second high selling animal overall at the show.

February 14, 1946

Farmer’s Night is again past history, but a large crowd attended the supper and program at the school auditorium which was sponsored by the Commercial Club. Following the supper served by the men, Ray Whitmer introduced Mayor H. A. Keith who gave the welcome address which was responded to by Leroy Wienk. Three high school students rendered vocal numbers. After the program the crowd disbursed, some attending the free dance while others attended a free movie at the Preston Theater.

Whipkey Chevrolet reminded farmers to have their tractors checked before spring work begins, don’t wait until just before you are ready to use it.

National Velvet with Mickey Rooney and Elizabeth Taylor is coming to the Preston Theater Sunday through Tuesday, February 17-19.

February 17, 1921

The fire whistle sounded Wednesday at 7:30 a.m., the alarm having been turned in from the Halvor Halvorson residence in the south part of the city. The fire company hustled out their hose carts and made a good run considering the rough roads and cold wind. Just before reaching the scene, word was dispatched that the blaze had been extinguished with a quick application of water and snow.
