Area producers are chomping at the bit to start planting crops. Unfortunately, wet conditions have put a damper on the spring planting season, both literally and figuratively. As it stands, planting is one to two weeks behind schedule, but South Dakota State University Agronomist, Paul Johnson, doesn’t believe farmers should yet begin to panic. “We are behind schedule,” said Johnson, “but in a normal spring we’re only able to get into fields a third of the days anyway. This gives farmers time to play catch-up.” With recent high winds and little to no precipitation, fields have already begun to dry out, and if that weather pattern continues, Johnson believes most producers should be able to get into their fields by the end of the week.
