1982: Esmond Merchants win the championship

Annette and Charemon Dunham attended the community club meeting on Mon., Sept. 13; on Friday, they were at the Iroquois FFA supper and homecoming coronation. Sunday, they helped with the Legion pancake breakfast for the benefit of the youth activity fund.

The Clendenings and Mike and Perianne from Woonsocket attended the BEE vs Flandreau football game at Bridgewater. Ryder Clendening plays guard for BEE, and Mike was a classmate in Woonsocket of the BEE coach.

Marlin Clendening had an entry in the Iroquois School homecoming parade with the 1941 Command car representing the TV program “Mash.”

The Clendenings attended the Dakota Energy Members lunch Tuesday in Huron.

Mike Miller and Neil Hiemstra were Sunday afternoon visitors at the Clendening's.

Several people attended the pancake breakfast in Iroquois on Sunday morning.

One to 1½" of rain was recorded this week.

History Note

1982: The Esmond Merchants co-ed softball team ended its regular season with an 11-1 record and a trophy for winning the Huron Mixed League “B” Division on Friday night.

They defeated “B-Ten” 12-5. Winning pitcher was Cindy Huber. Doug and Jeany Salter and Rod Hofer had the hot bats for the Merchants, and Cindy, Doug and Rod also led team defensive efforts.

The Merchants will finish the year in the league tournament this week. Team members are Gary Lorenz, Manager, Jeany and Doug Salter, Cathy and Rod Hofer, Cindy and Tim Huber, Deb and Jim Coughlin, Eileen and Brian Neneber, Vicki and Rick Aughenbaugh, Kevin Walter, Deb Finnerty, Steve DeJong, Cheri Moffitt, John Coughlin and Marie Gruntmeir.

The Esmond Merchants mixed league co-ed softball team won the championship in the Huron Tournament last week by defeating KIJV 12-8.

They defeated Burns Moving and Storage 15-6 and KIJV 22-8.

The trophies are on display at Walter’s Grocery in Iroquois.
