Bulldogs dominate St. Mary Cardinals

The Bulldogs traveled to Dell Rapids on Friday night for a 9B matchup featuring 4th-rated Dell Rapids St. Mary (1-1) and #5 De Smet (1-1). This would be the Bulldogs' first game on a short 80-yard field this season.

De Smet marched down the field on their opening drive, and Kadyn Fast found the end zone on a long run after a short pass from Britt Carlson, resulting in a 27-yard touchdown. The two-point conversion attempt was no good, and the Bulldogs led 6-0.

The Bulldog defense held, and the De Smet offense quickly made their way down the field again. Dylan Zell scored on a seven-yard touchdown run. Tom Aughenbaugh caught the two-point pass, and De Smet went ahead 14-0, still in the first quarter.

De Smet’s defense answered again with an interception by Aughenbaugh. Trace Van Regenmorter got the score on a four-yard touchdown run. Gannon Gruenhagen scored the two-point conversion, and the lead was 22-0 for the Bulldogs.

With time running out in the second quarter, the Cardinals intercepted a Bulldog pass near their own end zone. St Mary's quarterback CJ Smith found Gabriel Lineman for a seven-yard touchdown pass. Smith took it in himself for the two-point conversion, and the halftime score was 22-8 in favor of De Smet.

In the second half, De Smet wasted no time making their way down the field again. Van Regenmorter took it in for a three-yard touchdown run. Fast got the two-point conversion, and the Bulldogs increased their lead to 30-8.

After turnovers by each team, De Smet took over after another fumble by the Cardinals on the 11-yard line. Fast ran it in for a three-yard touchdown. The two-point conversion was no good, and the scoreboard read 36-8.

On the next Dell Rapids play after the kickoff, Van Regenmorter intercepted a Smith pass, and De Smet took over on the 16-yard line. The drive was capped off by a one-yard touchdown run by Carlson. Gruenhagen caught the two-point conversion. De Smet led 44-8.

De Smet scored once more with a 12-yard run by Gannon Gilligan. Edger Wilkinson caught a two-point conversion pass from Brody Halverson, and the final score was 52-8 in favor of the Bulldogs.

Offensive leaders for De Smet were Carlson 4/5 passing for 38 yards and a touchdown, 49 yards rushing and a one-yard rushing touchdown. Fast had 27 yards receiving and a touchdown, and 51 yards rushing. Van Regenmorter rushed for 45 yards and two touchdowns. Zell had 58 yards and one touchdown, and Gilligan added 15 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, Van Regenmorter led with seven tackles and an interception. Noah Harrison had six tackles; Fast had four tackles; Aughenbaugh completed two tackles and an interception.

For Dell Rapids St. Mary, Smith threw for one touchdown. Nic Gaspar had 15 tackles.

The Bulldogs (2-1) will be at home next Friday, taking on Oldham-Ramona/Rutland.
