Bulldogs go to work vs. Warriors

Bulldog football was back in action Thursday at Wilkinson Field. The 9A and DVC matchup featured the #1 ranked and 6-0 De Smet taking on 5-1 and receiving votes in the polls, Castlewood.

De Smet won the opening toss and took the opening kickoff. On the third offensive play of the game, Kalen Garry took the handoff and ran for a 52-yard touchdown. Colt Wilkinson threw to Rett Osthus for the 2-point conversion, and the Bulldogs led 8-0 early in the first quarter.

The De Smet defense forced a quick 3-and-out by the Warriors and took over again on offense. The Bulldog offense stalled out around midfield, and De Smet gave the ball back to Castlewood.

The Warriors again went 3-and-out, forcing a punt. Garry fielded the punt and ran it back 67 yards for a touchdown. Wilkinson’s 2-point conversion pass to Garry was caught, and De Smet led 16-0.

After back-and-forth defensive stops for each team, De Smet took over again on offense. Wilkinson’s pass was intercepted by Hunter Smith, who ran back for a touchdown. Jaron Tharaldsen kicked the extra point, and the score was 16-7 in favor of De Smet.

The Bulldogs began their drive with strong runs by Tory Holland and Garry. Wilkinson then found Osthus for a 30-yard touchdown pass. The 2-point conversion failed, and the lead was 22-7 De Smet.

The Warriors took over at their own 20-yard line, but a big holding penalty backed them up near their end zone. Tom Aughenbaugh tackled Warrior running back Jeremiah Wiersma in the end zone, and De Smet was awarded the safety making the score 24-7.

De Smet took the free kick after the safety, and powered their way down the field. After multiple good runs, Garry took a 22-yard pass from Wilkinson in for the touchdown. Wilkinson rushed for the 2-point conversion, and the Bulldogs led 32-7.

Castlewood’s next drive ended with a very short punt, and De Smet quickly scored on a 1-yard run by Osthus. Garry hauled in the 2-point conversion, and the lead was 40-7.

The Warrior’s next possession resulted in a Kadyn Fast interception. Garry took the next play for an 83-yard touchdown run. The 2-point attempt was no good, and the halftime score was 46-7.

The junior varsity rosters for both teams began the second half. De Smet scored twice quickly on a 7-yard touchdown run by Trace Van Regenmorter, a 2-point conversion reception by Gannon Gruenhagen and a 21-yard touchdown run by Lane Holland. The game ended just into the 3rd quarter on a 60-7 mercy rule score.
