Bulldogs score homecoming win

Posted

Friday night saw the De Smet Bulldog football team taking on the Castlewood Warriors, capping off Homecoming week in De Smet. The matchup between Bulldogs, 4-1 and #4 ranked in class 9A, and the Warriors, 2-2 and coming off a 41-12 win over #2 (9B) Colman-Egan, set up to be a good one.

On a beautiful fall evening at Wilkinson Field, De Smet won the toss and received the ball first, taking it into Castlewood territory. The Bulldogs, however, would fumble on their first offensive play giving the ball right back to the Warriors.

The De Smet defense held to 3 and out, on the next drive forcing a punt by Castlewood. The Bulldogs then drove the ball down the field, eventually stalling out on offense and turning the ball over on downs.

Castlewood took over, but Cody Cavanaugh intercepted a Warrior pass deflected by Rett Osthus. Two plays later, Kalen Garry broke free for a 62-yard touchdown run. Garry also converted the two point try, and the Bulldogs let 8-0. That score held to end the first quarter.

De Smet’s defense came up big again, forcing another 3 and out punt for the Warriors. After a long run by Garry, followed by a 48-yard pass from Colt Wilkinson to Garry, the Bulldogs capped off the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run by Garry. Osthus scored the two-point conversion, and the score was 16-0 in favor of De Smet.

The Bulldog defense again did not allow a first down, and took over after a Castlewood punt. De Smet drove down the field, and Wilkinson took it in for a 10-yard rushing touchdown. The two-point conversion was no good, and that put the Bulldogs up 22-0 ending the first half.

Castlewood would get the ball to start the second half. The Warriors moved the ball on offense this possession, but eventually were held and turned it over on downs near midfield.

De Smet quickly took advantage of this possession. Osthus scored on the Bulldogs first offensive play of the half taking it 45 yards for a touchdown. The two-point conversion failed, and De Smet led 28-0.

The Bulldogs would score again in the 3rd quarter on a 5-yard touchdown run by Garry, capped off by a Cavanaugh 2-pont conversion and lead 36-0. That would be the final score of the quarter.

De Smet scored one more time in the contest, beginning the 4th quarter with a 6-yard rushing touchdown by Osthus and 2-point conversion by Cavanaugh, leading 44-0. Castlewood got a score late in the quarter on a 35-yard touchdown run by Sam Kooima. That would be the final score of the game, and the Bulldogs went on to win 44-6.

Leading the way for De Smet was Garry with 186 yards rushing, 3 touchdowns and 48 yards receiving. Osthus chipped in with 89 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns. Wilkinson was 2-4 with 72 yards passing.

Defensively, Wilkinson racked up 11 tackles, Al Dobson 8, and Osthus 7. Cavanaugh had an interception, and Griffin Clubb blocked a punt.
For Castlewood, Tristan Nielsen was 4-14 passing for 32 yards and 1 interception. Kooima led with 35 yards rushing, and Carson Kirwan ran 9 times for 25 yards.

Next week is a big one for the Bulldogs. They will be taking on undefeated and #1 ranked Howard in Howard.
