De Smet football was back in action Friday taking on the Estelline-Hendricks Redhawks. The Bulldogs came into the matchup ranked #4, moving up one spot in the polls for the week.
De Smet began the game with some injuries, with starters Kalen Garry, Al Dobson and Ethan McCune all sitting out the game this week. The Bulldogs won the toss and received the opening kickoff and quickly marched down the field with runs from Rett Osthus and Cody Cavanaugh. Colt Wilkinson then found Tory Holland for a 16-yard touchdown pass. Cody Cavanaugh rushed for the two-point conversion and De Smet led 8-0.
On the ensuing kickoff, De Smet kicked the ball deep. The ball was bobbled by the Redhawks and Osthus made a great hustle play – jumping on the ball and securing the turnover for the Bulldogs. Two plays later, Cavanaugh took the ball for a fifteen-yard rushing touchdown. Wilkinson again found Holland on a pass for the two-point conversion, and the Bulldogs led 16-0.
De Smet would hold on defense, forcing the Redhawks to punt on their next drive. Wilkinson hooked up with Cavanaugh for a long pass play, and runs from Osthus and Dylan Zell ended with a 5-yard touchdown run by Osthus. The two-point conversion was no good and the Bulldogs led 22-0, still in the first quarter.
The Bulldogs began the second quarter forcing another E-H punt. This possession had nice carries again by Zell and Osthus, and ending with a two-yard rushing touchdown by Wilkinson. The two-point conversion was again denied, and De Smet led 28-0.
Estelline was held to 3 and out, and De Smet took over at the 50-yard line. On the first play, Wilkinson converted on a pass to Holland for a 50-yard touchdown. Cavanaugh caught the two-point conversion, and the Bulldogs led 36-0 in the second quarter.
De Smet’s junior varsity entered the game and played the remainder from this point on. Both teams would remain scoreless for the rest of the half, and the halftime score was 36-0.
The Bulldogs began the second half holding the Redhawks offense and forcing a punt. Trace Van Regenmorter found Kadyn Fast on a swing pass for an 87-yard touchdown. De Smet would hold Estelline-Hendricks scoreless for the remainder of the game. Fast found the endzone one more time with a nine-yard touchdown run and two-point conversion, and the game ended with a 50-0 score in the 4th quarter.
Leading the way for De Smet were Osthus with 7 carries for 44 yards rushing and 1 touchdown. Fast had 4 carries for 41 yards and 1 touchdown, and Zell 7 rushes for 32 yards. Wilkinson was 5-7 passing for 111 yards and 2 touchdown throws. Holland caught 2 passes for 66 yards and 2 touchdowns. Cavanaugh caught 2 passes for 38 yards. Van Regenmorter completed one pass to Fast for an 87-yard touchdown. Defensively, Zell led with 13 tackles and Fast had 7.
