The Bulldogs outlasted the #3 rated Viborg-Hurley Cougars Saturday night in the Sioux Falls Pentagon Heritage Classic 58-54.
The game was a very physical contest with both teams showing their strength and athletic ability.
The first half was a great start for 6’2” junior Tory Holland, as he seemed to carry the Bulldogs to a 32-24 halftime lead.
“Tory had a great night and got us started early knocking down big shots,” said Coach Jeff Gruenhagen. “He just seemed to be everywhere.”
Holland ended the game with fifteen points, two assists and two steals.
De Smet’s largest lead was eleven points early in the third quarter, but the Cougars kept battling back and tied the score at 39. That was when Kalen Garry and Ethan McCune began their second half surge. They helped De Smet maintain their lead with their sharp shooting.
Late in the 4th quarter, an excellent assist pass from Rett Osthus to McCune resulted in a three-point play that put the Bulldogs up by six points with less than one minute to play, icing the game.
“Ethan hit some clutch baskets down the stretch to keep us in front,” added Gruenhagen.
McCune led the scoring with 18 points and four rebounds while Garry tallied 17 points and seven rebounds.
Osthus added six points and four assists while playing gamely with a badly bruised thigh.
The Bulldogs shot 44% from the field while the Cougars shot 39%. Viborg-Hurley outrebounded De Smet 30-25.

De Smet remains rated #1 in Class B boys hoops with a 6-1 record. It was a breakout night for 6’7” sophomore center Damon Wilkinson as he got his first start of the season.
“Damon played really well in his first start,” said Coach Jeff Gruenhagen. “Twenty-one points and fourteen rebounds were just a great effort.”
The Bulldogs placed four players in double figures with Kalen Garry leading the way with 23 points and eight rebounds. Ethan McCune scored 11 points and had five rebounds, while Rett Osthus added 10 points and again led the team with five assists.
