Daily life without electricity is a challenge


We were lucky to have survived the big storm last week without any damage, but living without electricity for a day was more of a challenge than I would ever have imagined.

When the power first went out, I lit a candle and waited for our electricity to come back on within a few minutes, like it usually does. It didn’t take long to realize that it wasn’t going to switch back on anytime soon.

I was constantly flipping on the light switches as I entered rooms, without giving any thought to it, and then having to back track to flip them back off since they weren’t working anyway.

There weren’t many options for meals during the time, since I quickly realized I couldn’t use the stove, oven, microwave or any other of my cooking gadgets that required electricity. It was primarily cold sandwiches, chips and anything else we could find in our pantry.

After about 12 hours, I started getting nervous about everything in our fridge and freezers. Although we were doing our best to stay out of them to preserve the cold as long as we could, our fridge started getting warmer, and I began to worry about all the food inside going bad.

Thankfully, I remembered we had a few bags of ice in our outside freezer that I could use to keep things cool until our power turned back on. I quickly packed up a cooler with everything in our refrigerator that could go bad.

I went out to get the ice in our garage refrigerator, but unfortunately, I didn’t realize we had a couple raccoon tails in that freezer, too. After accidentally touching some fur, I had to take a moment to regain a regular heartbeat and proceeded to cautiously remove all the ice I could without any further surprises.

I’m happy to say we were able to keep everything cool until our power was restored, and after going about a day without any power, I learned that we need to be better prepared for any future storms. We need to find more flashlights and learn to conserve our battery life on our phones.
