The 2-0 De Smet Bulldogs traveled to White on Friday night to take on the 0-2 Deubrook Dolphins. This was the Bulldogs second DVC football matchup of the season.
De Smet won the toss and elected to receive the ball. The Dolphin’s opening kick went to Rett Osthus who ran it back 77 yards for the Bulldog’s first touchdown. Kadyn Fast ran in the two-point conversion, putting the Bulldogs up 8-0.
The Bulldogs then kicked off to the Dolphins. On Deubrook’s first offensive play, Osthus intercepted the pass and ran it back for a 15-yard De Smet touchdown. Colt Wilkinson then rushed for the two-point conversion, putting the Bulldogs up 16-0 with only 27 seconds off the clock in the first quarter.
The De Smet defense forced a 3-0 out punt from Deubrook. On the first play of the Bulldogs drive, Wilkinson found Kalen Garry on a short pass, resulting in a 25-yard De Smet touchdown. Fast converted the two-point attempt, and the Bulldogs’ lead was increased to 24-0 still early in the first quarter.
De Smet again forced a quick punt from the Dolphins. Wilkinson passed to Garry for a long gain, setting up a short touchdown run by Tory Holland. Wilkinson’s pass to Osthus was good for the two-point conversion, putting De Smet up 32-0.
The Bulldog defense proved its strength forcing yet another 3 and out from the Dolphins. After a few short runs by De Smet, Fast rushed for an 18-yard touchdown run. Wilkinson found Garry on the two-point conversion pass, putting the Bulldogs up 40-0 with 15 seconds left in the first quarter. This would be the end of the night for the De Smet starters.
The De Smet junior varsity then battled the Deubrook varsity for the remainder of the game. These two squads faced a back-and-forth defensive battle, with neither team scoring again for the rest of the evening. The final score showed 40-0 in favor of the De Smet Bulldogs, who remain ranked #1 in this week coaches’ poll.
Leaders for the Bulldogs on offense were Wilkinson 5-5 passing for 49 yards and one touchdown pass. Garry had 33 yards receiving and one touchdown reception. Fast had 34 yards rushing and one touchdown while Dylan Zell added 31 yards rushing. Osthus scored twice on special teams/defense.
On defense, Lane Holland led with eight tackles. Damon Wilkinson, Tom Aughenbaugh and Zell each contributed five.
No stats were reported for Deubrook.
De Smet will take on Elkton-Lake Benton on Friday in De Smet.
