It was a perfect night for Smoke Out in the Park

Ten teams competed for the top spot in this year’s competition

Kingsbury Journal hosted the second annual Smoke Out in the Park in Lake Preston Thorsnes Park on Saturday night. What was looking like a rainy day turned out to be a perfect night to enjoy some BBQ ribs with people throughout the whole county and beyond coming to enjoy.

A key feature of the event involves volunteer fire department BBQ teams from around the county. The fire department team that rates highest with the judges determines the event's location the following year, with the rule that the event cannot be held in the same town two years in a row.Last year, the Lake Preston Fire Department rated supreme. This year, De Smet won by 4 points, meaning that next years’s event will be hosted in De Smet.

Over 260 meal tickets were sold to residents from near and far who came to enjoy, taste testing all the ribs.Everyone was given a ticket, so they could choose a People's Choice.

This year's judges were Jamie Lancaster, Eric Larson, Al McLaughlin, Matt Aughenbaugh and Reid McDaniel. In a random order, they taste tested ribs from the ten teams, and the results were as follows.

First Place- Honey Do BBQ - Brad and Sarah Baker from Hermosa, S.D.

Second Place- Checkered BBQ - Jason and Christina Paul from Lake Preston, S.D.

Third Place- De Smet ResQue - Scott Myers, Jason Small, Mikenna Hojer, Jim & Connie Girard from De Smet, S.D.

People's Choice - Checkered BBQ
