The Lady Bulldogs began their volleyball season by traveling to Howard on Tues., Aug. 24.
The Bulldogs took to the court as a well-rounded team with a lot of power behind their strong front-row hitters.
After a tough first set, they started setting the ball and hitting well in the next two. With De Smet up 2-1 in sets going into the 4th, the Tigers stepped up their blocking and defense to slow the Bulldog attack down. De Smet trailed most of the 4th set, which ended with a Howard win.
Going 2-2 into set five, a 15-point set, the Bulldogs showed determination to finish. They played well as a team, attacking the ball, stopping Howard at the net and achieving a win, 20-18.
The leaders for the Bulldogs were Kennadi Buchholz with 31 kills, 10 blocks, 19 digs; Jada Burke with 11 kills, 17 digs; Emma Albrecht with 20 assists, two aces and Cori Birkel with 7 blocks and two aces.
The Lady Bulldogs traveled again for the second game of the season, heading to Deubrook on Thurs., Aug. 26. There was not as much excitement in the team as on Tuesday night in Howard.
De Smet did a better job serving and serve receiving but needed to attack the ball at all times. Deubrook hit the ball well, and the Bulldogs struggled with slowing the hits down. De Smet fought hard the whole night, especially in the second set, but came up short Thursday, with the Dolphins getting the win.
The Bulldogs were led by Kennadi Buchholz with nine kills, 13 blocks, 13 digs; Cori Birkel with four kills, seven blocks and 14 digs; Emma Albrecht with nine assists, 14 digs and Jada Burke with three kills and 15 digs.
