Osthus commits to play at Dakota Wesleyan University

Senior guard Rett Osthus has made a commitment to Dakota Wesleyan University. If this story sounds familiar, it could be, because both of Rett’s older sisters, Rylie and Rynn, have attended DWU. Osthus made his commitment on Sept. 30, 2021.

“It was a smaller campus, and I'm used to a small town,” Osthus said. “It is not too big for me. Both my sisters have attended there and really enjoyed it. I like the people out there; I know a lot of people, and the coaches really made me feel like I was just welcomed there. That is what sold me on DWU.”

While attending DWU, Osthus plans to take classes geared toward a business degree, but said he wanted to keep an open mind in case that changed.

Osthus has been playing basketball since he was a child. Together with his sisters, his dad was also a coach with the De Smet Girls Basketball team and was a respected player in high school here in De Smet.

“My whole family is a big basketball family,” said Osthus.

In third grade he started playing games and really got hooked on the sport. He describes basketball as his greatest passion.

“Building relationships with your friends, winning with teammates and the atmosphere the game brings really makes me a love basketball,” said Osthus, relating a few reasons he enjoys playing the sport.

Osthus is a versatile and team-oriented player. He has a great ability to scan the court in a split second and pass the ball if there is another player open. He also has the skills to shoot a three-pointer if he needs to.

Osthus said his best skills in basketball are either passing or defense. In Friday’s game at the Entringer Classic in Brookings, he was selected as the Most Valuable Player.

“Basketball has made me build a lot of great relationships with not only my teammates and schoolmates, but also with the community,” he said. “I've become good friends with a lot of the older folks around town.”

Attending a Bulldog game in De Smet, Brookings and even Sioux Falls, it is surprising to see the number of fans and older fans who follow this amazing team.

His advice for next year’s basketball team, “Work as hard as you can. That's how you' re going to be successful.”

Two successful players from a team that emphasizes teamwork. Together, we accomplish more.
